Victoria Cross Memorial Stone

On Sunday 24th July 2016 at 11.30, as part of the Lowestoft Summer Festival, Lowestoft will receive its Victoria Cross Memorial Stone to celebrate the award of the Victoria Cross to Claude Charles Castleton VC (12 April 1893 – 29 July 1916)  who was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

He was born in Kirkley and educated locally before going to Australia where he joined the Armed Forces and served in the First World war. Winning the VC for gallantry in the face of enemy warship activity.

Each winner of the VC will be remembered by a memorial stone laid on the 100 anniversary of award. The short ceremony,  will take place near the War Memorial on the Sea Front and will see both British Legion and Military support to the event. A padre will conduct the service and a bugler will play as the large stone is unveiled . The stone will remain in that location close to the War memorial to commemorate his achievements. Light refreshments will follow the service.

This event has been organised to fit within the Lowestoft Summer Festival weekend and it is hoped people will attend this event and then stay on the sea front for the rest of the day’s activity.
