First Light Festival - Danny Boyle

Screen on the sand at 11:30 PM

Danny Boyle – the Academy Award-winning film-maker and director of numerous acclaimed films including Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire, joins us on the beach to introduce his 2007 sci-fi epic Sunshine with Gareth Evans, Moving Image Curator of London’s Whitechapel Gallery.

Written by Alex Garland, Sunshine follows a crew of eight astronauts in their effort to revive Earth’s dying sun and save the planet. Outstandingly shot, with a remarkable ensemble cast including Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans and Rose Bynre, and a stunning improvised score by Underworld and John Murphy, Sunshine explores ‘what happens to your mind when you meet the creator of all things in the universe’.

‘(the film) portrays the deep sense of the humanity that we always carry with us, no matter how far we venture from home.” The Washington Post

“This extraordinary epic…certainly seems to burn as brightly as a host of fiery angels.” Mark Kermode
